We are delighted to be able to offer Latin at SWCHS across all Key Stages. Latin stands out in its academic breadth, as it encompasses language, problem solving, history, literature and culture all set in the context of the fascinating ancient world.

Studying Latin enables students to:

  • develop problem solving skills, close attention to detail, keen analysis and logic.
  • explore English derivations from Latin, broadening and enriching their vocabulary.
  • gain a sophisticated understanding of grammar: Latin relies on a thorough grasp of how a language fits together. Students can then apply this knowledge to English and other modern languages.
  • discover the significant and lasting impact the Romans have had on our culture and society. An awareness of this opens up the world of literature and art, as countless generations have drawn upon the Romans for inspiration.

We offer lots of trips, both in the UK and abroad, to bring the Roman world alive and academics visit the school to give engaging talks on aspects of the curriculum and beyond.

So study Latin and carpe diem!
